Testing Cleaners Against Bacteria

When it comes to cleaning up after my family of 6, I want to know my cleaners are doing their job. Multipurpose cleaners need to smell good, stainless steel cleaners need to leave a shine, and bathroom cleaner needs to kill ALL the bacteria. But that got me to thinking…

HOW DO MY DIY / NATURAL CLEANERS STACK UP AGAINST BACTERIA???

WHAT ABOUT THE POPULAR, COMMERCIALLY MARKETED ‘GREEN’ CLEANERS??

Well I decided to order a legit science experiment kit on amazon, and in today’s new video, I decided to share my process and results of this experiment.

TESTING POPULAR CLEANERS

As mentioned in the video, the cleaners I’ve tested out include:

  1. Clorox Compostable Cleaning Wipes
  2. Method Antibac
  3. My Homemade Hydrogen Peroxide + Lemon  + Water Cleaner
  4. Method Grapefruit All Purpose
  5. Mrs. Meyers All Purpose
  6. Boulder Stainless Steel Cleaner
  7. My Homemade Vinegar + Tea Tree + Water Cleaner

(Most of these cleaners can be found on Grove- and the glass bottles for my DIY ones can be purchased there as well. Get a free Grove cleaning kit with my referral link- https://www.grove.co/referrer/7207106/ )

I decided to run this test for 72 hours, since my goal was to see the effects on bacteria.

Want to see my process for running this test and collecting bacteria? Start watching HERE.

Ok, now it’s time for our results! Let’s first take a look at a clean dish.

And now here we go with each of the dishes after running the experiment!

(Keep in mind that I accidentally tore the agar at the top here- nothing to do with the cleaner or bacteria.)

So what is our conclusion??? Watch the end of the video HERE to see it LIVE!

But in summary, DIY / homemade cleaners can actually be more effective at killing bacteria than store-bought multipurpose cleaners! I’m also having so many regrets about using my Method all-purpose and Mrs. Meyers in the bathrooms to clean! 😉

But you live and learn right?

And to keep a balanced view here, not all bacteria is bad. But in my humble opinion…. all bathroom / sink bacteria IS. So I will definitely be using only the top 3 cleaners I tested for those.

And in case you missed the video reveal, my top 3 performers for killing bacteria were:

  1. Method Antibac
  2. My Homemade Hydrogen Peroxide + Lemon  + Water Cleaner
  3. My Homemade Vinegar + Tea Tree + Water Cleaner

You can download my homemade vinegar cleaner recipe here, and the peroxide recipe here. They can be printed, Pinned, or just screenshot and save for later!

Such a great video and blog post! I’m really curious if the dottera cleaning concentrate works as well as the diy cleaners. But I’m so disappointed in the mrs Meyers all purpose. I love the smell, so I wish they had more cleaning power. But now I can be mindful and Chipewyan my kitchen surfaces more, and use a stronger cleaner in the bathrooms.
    Eye opening for sure!

Aw I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I am pretty curious about the doterra and the Young living Thieves as well. Those might need to be in my next experiments! I felt a bit disappointed with those other cleaners too. But I guess if we’re mostly looking at them for the scent and helping to wipe dust / grime off surfaces we’re still alright. Just have to prioritize when it comes to budget and using the right cleaner for each situation… But I’ll be honest- I don’t normally like to keep this many different types of cleaners on hand! 😉

As you mentioned in the video I’m curious about how the Hydrogen Peroxide homemade cleaner without lemon oil or with the tea tree oil. See if that minimizes the mold?
